Drei Jahre lang fotografierte Milena Schilling 45 Menschen aus Konstanz nackt im Bodensee. Menschen aller Körperformen und Hintergründe im Alter von 18 bis 73 Jahren tauchten vor ihrer Kamera ab.
Der Antrieb zu dieser Fotoserie entspringt einer atemberaubenden Begegnung mit der Natur im offenen Meer und der Erkenntnis: Bestehen wir zwar selbst aus 60–70 % Wasser, bleibt uns dieses Element doch unzähmbar überlegen und zugleich lebensnotwendig. Obwohl 71 % der Erdoberfläche von Wasser bedeckt sind, kann der Mensch darin nicht leben. In der scheinbar unendlichen blauen Weite zu schwimmen, prägte die Fotografin tief und wurde der Beginn einer fotografischen Reise zum Wasser als Ursprungselement allen Lebens: O R I G I O.

Project description
For three years, Milena Schilling photographed 45 people from Constance naked in Lake Constance. People of all body types and backgrounds, aged 18 to 73, dived in front of her camera.
The inspiration for this photo series came from a breathtaking encounter with nature in the open sea and the realization that although we ourselves consist of 60-70% water, this element remains untameably superior to us and at the same time essential for life. Although 71% of the Earth‘s surface is covered by water, humans cannot live in it. Swimming in the seemingly endless blue expanse had a profound effect on the photographer and marked the beginning of a photographic journey to water as the origin of all life: O R I G I O.

Für das daraus entstehende Projekt entwickelte die junge Fotografin ein präzises Konzept und sprang damit schließlich erneut buchstäblich ins kalte Wasser – diesmal vor der eigenen Haustür in den Bodensee. Zunächst suchte sie Unterwasserspots in Ufernähe, weitete ihre Ortswahl jedoch rasch aus und entschloss sich schließlich, einen Segelschein zu machen. So brachte sie ihre Gruppe mit dem Segelboot ins tiefere Wasser, um die geplanten Szenerien unter der Oberfläche zu formieren.
Jede Komposition reifte in der Theorie, wurde an Land geprobt und schließlich im Wasser modelliert und fotografisch eingefangen. Doch dabei spielte die Natur regelmäßig all ihre Willkür aus: Wassertemperatur, Windstärke, Witterungsverhältnisse der Vortage, Pflanzen – nichts war planbar, verlässlich oder gar wiederholbar. Erst bei Wassertemperaturen unterhalb von 12 Grad war eine klare Sicht möglich. Die Tauchenden konnten deshalb nur wenige Minuten im kalten Bodensee verharren, und die Fotografin konnte pro Tauchgang nur eine einzige Aufnahme auslösen. Erst später am Bildschirm zeigte sich die Qualität der Bilder, die dem Projekt seine analogähnliche Echtheit verleihen. Entstanden ist ein uns gleichermaßen alltäglicher und in dieser Form doch unbekannter, malerischer Blick auf eine Welt im nassen Element.

The young photographer developed a precise concept for the resulting project and literally jumped into the cold water again – this time on her own doorstep in Lake Constance. Initially, she looked for underwater spots near the shore, but quickly expanded her choice of locations and finally decided to get a sailing licen- se. She took her group out into deeper water on a sailboat to create the planned scenes below the surface. Each composition was developed in theory, rehearsed on land, and finally modeled and captured photographically in the water. In total it took her up to 9 hours for only one picture.
But nature regularly played its arbitrary hand: water temperature, wind strength, weather conditions in the previous days, plants – nothing was predictable, relia- ble, or even repeatable. Clear visibility was only possible at water temperatures below 12 degrees Celsius. The divers could therefore only remain in the cold Lake for a few minutes, and the photographer could only take one single shot per dive. It was only later, on the screen, that the quality of the images became apparent, lending the project its analog-like authenticity. The photos are straight out of camera and not edited. The result is a view of a world in the wet element that is both familiar and yet unfamiliar in this form, a picturesque view.

Die mystische Ästhetik der Bilder wurde inspiriert von Gemälden und Skulpturen der Renaissance. Die Trübungen des Sees und das sanfte Licht des bewölkten Himmels erzeugen einen zeitlosen Charakter der Fotografien und wecken Erinnerungen an unseren Ursprung: Jedes menschliche Leben wächst umschlossen von Fruchtwasser heran. Beinahe schwerelos, frei von Besitztümern, getragen von einem Element, das keine Grenzen, Sprachbarrieren oder Hierarchien kennt. Milena Schillings Fotografien öffnen unseren Blick und nähren unsere Sehnsucht nach ursprünglicher Verbundenheit – sowohl mit unserer eigenen Spezies als auch mit dem Wasser, das unseren Lebensraum von allen anderen bekannten Planeten unterscheidet. Die Serie zeigt auch, wie vielfältig schön der menschliche Körper ist.
Und das Werk O R I G I O steht erst am Anfang: Derzeit bereitet sich Milena Schilling darauf vor, eines Tages zu den gigantischen Meeressäugern zu segeln, um Wale im respektvollen Wechselspiel mit dem puren, winzigen Menschen zu fotografieren.
O R I G I O ist eine Hommage an das Leben, daran, wie facettenreich und von Schönheit erfüllt es ist. Ein demütiger Blick auf das Element Wasser, dem wir Menschen alle gleichermaßen unsere Existenz auf der Erde verdanken, sowie eine Erinnerung daran, dass wir alle aus dem gleichen Wasser geformt sind und darüber miteinander verbunden.

The mystical aesthetic of the images was inspired by Renaissance paintings and sculptures. The turbidity of the lake and the soft light of the cloudy sky lend the photographs a timeless character and evoke memories of our origins: every human life grows enclosed in amniotic fluid. Almost weightless, free of possessions, carried by an element that knows no boundaries, language barriers, or hierarchies. Milena Schilling‘s photographs open our eyes and nourish our longing for primal connection—both with our own species and with the water that distinguishes our habitat from all other known planets. The series also shows how beautifully diverse the human body is.
And the O R I G I O project is only just beginning: Milena Schilling is currently preparing to sail out to the gigantic marine mammals one day to photograph whales in respectful interaction with tiny humans.
O R I G I O is a tribute to life, to how multifaceted and full of beauty it is. It is a humble look at the element of water, to which we humans owe our existence on Earth, as well as a reminder that we are all formed from the same water and connected to each other through it.

Biografie
Milena Schilling, geboren 1996, lebt und arbeitet als Fotografin in Konstanz am – und häufig im – Bodensee. Solowerke ebenso wie Gruppenausstellungen der jungen Nachwuchskünstlerin wurden bereits in Deutschland sowie international beispielsweise in Frankreich oder dem Iran gezeigt und mit bedeutenden Preisen gewürdigt.
Ländlich aufgewachsen auf einem ehemaligen Bauernhof in Süddeutschland, begann sie mit 14 Jahren, den Menschen durch die Linse zu erforschen. Doch nicht nur der Mensch – auch die umgebende Natur spielte schon immer eine prägende Rolle in ihren Werken. Ihre erste Spiegelreflexkamera finanzierte sie aus einem Erbe ihrer Großmutter und richtete ein Fotostudio auf dem elterlichen Dachboden ein. Schon als Schülerin sah Milena Schilling ihren Weg als Fotografin klar vor sich und ließ sich von diesem Traum durch nichts abbringen.
Mit einem Bachelor in Konstanz und einem Masterabschluss in Photographic Studies in Dortmund trieb Milena Schilling ihre beeindruckende Karriere voran: Heute lebt sie nicht nur Vollzeit von ihrer Fotografie, sondern unterrichtet dieses Fach auch an der Hochschule Konstanz, wo sie als Stipendiatin für junge Professorinnen ausgezeichnet wurde. Ihre freien Projekte und Auftragsarbeiten basieren auf starken Konzepten und sind von künstlerischen Einflüssen durchzogen. Sie bewegen sich zwischen Corporate-, Editorial-, Porträt- und Werbefotografie.
Milena Schilling ist aktives Mitglied in Netzwerken wie dem BFF, dem Female Photoclub sowie dem Fotobus e.V. und engagiert sich ehrenamtlich als Jurorin bei Fotografie-Awards.

Biography
Milena Schilling, born in 1996, lives and works as a photo- grapher in Constance on—and often in—Lake Constance. Solo works and group exhibitions by the young artist have already been shown in Germany and internationally, for example in France and Iran, and have been honored with prestigious awards.
Growing up in the countryside on a former farm in southern Germany, she began exploring people through the lens at the age of 14. But it is not only people – the surrounding nature has always played a formative role in her work. She financed her first SLR camera with an inheritance from her grandmot- her and set up a photo studio in her parents‘ attic. Even as a schoolgirl, Milena Schilling had a clear vision of her path as a photographer and never let anything deter her from
this dream. With a bachelor‘s degree in design with focus on photography and art, and a master‘s degree in photogra- phic studies from Dortmund, Milena Schilling pursued her impressive career: Today, she not only makes a full-time living from her photography, but also teaches the subject at the University of Constance, where she has been awarded a scholarship for young female professors.
Her independent projects and commissioned work are based on strong concepts and are infused with artistic influences. They range from corporate, editorial, portrait, and adver- tising photography. Milena Schilling is an active member of networks such as the BFF, the Female Photoclub, and Foto- bus e.V., and volunteers as a judge for photography awards.

For three years, Milena Schilling photographed 45 people from Constance naked in Lake Constance. People of all body types and backgrounds, aged 18 to 73, dived in front of her camera.

Für das daraus entstehende Projekt entwickelte die junge Fotografin ein präzises Konzept und sprang damit schließlich erneut buchstäblich ins kalte Wasser – diesmal vor der eigenen Haustür in den Bodensee.
